چکیده

Abstract. Projections of the response of Sahel rainfall to future global warming diverge significantly. Meanwhile, paleoclimatic records suggest that Sahel rainfall is capable of abrupt transitions in response to gradual forcing. Here we present climate modeling evidence for the possibility of an abrupt intensification of Sahel rainfall under future climate change. Analyzing 30 coupled global climate model simulations, we identify seven models where central Sahel rainfall increases by 40% to 300% over the 21st century, owing to a northward expansion of the West African monsoon domain. Rainfall in these models 5 is non–linearly related to sea surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Atlantic and Mediterranean moisture source regions, intensifying abruptly beyond a certain SST warming level. We argue that this behaviour is consistent with a self–amplifying dynamic–thermodynamical feedback, implying that the gradual increase in oceanic moisture availability under warming could trigger a sudden intensification of monsoon rainfall far inland of today’s core monsoon region.

Drought in the African Sahel: variability, change and agency

Tyndall working papers are "work in progress". Whilst they are commented on by Tyndall researchers, they have not been subject to a full peer review. The accuracy of this work and the conclusions reached are the responsibility of the author(s) alone and not the Tyndall Centre. Summary The African Sahel experienced a prolonged dry episode in the latter decades of the twentieth century, character...

A New Non-linear Control of the Four-Leg Inverter with Decoupled Model and Fast Dynamic Response for PV Generation Systems

Distributed generation (DG) will play an important role in future power generation systems, especially in stand-alone applications. Three phase four-leg inverter is a well-known topology which can be used as an interface power converter for DGs. Thanks to the fourth leg to provide the neutral path, the four-leg inverter is able to supply balanced loads as well as unbalanced loads. In this paper...

Detection and Attribution of Twentieth-Century Northern and Southern African Rainfall Change

The spatial patterns, time history, and seasonality of African rainfall trends since 1950 are found to be deducible from the atmosphere’s response to the known variations of global sea surface temperatures (SSTs). The robustness of the oceanic impact is confirmed through the diagnosis of 80 separate 50-yr climate simulations across a suite of atmospheric general circulation models. Drying over ...

Variability and Predictability of West African Droughts: A Review on the Role of Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies

The Sahel experienced a severe drought during the 1970s and 1980s after wet periods in the 1950s and 1960s. Although rainfall partially recovered since the 1990s, the drought had devastating impacts on society. Most studies agree that this dry period resulted primarily from remote effects of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies amplified by local land surface–atmosphere interactions. This pa...
